Resign - CPP to Napo over 'your Nkrumah' comment

Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has issued a stern demand for the resignation of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh from all governmental and political positions within 24 hours.

This follows remarks made by Dr. Prempeh, the current Member of Parliament for Manhyia South and Minister for Energy, during an event in Kumasi on July 9, 2024, which the CPP has labelled as "reprehensible" and "unbecoming."

At a press conference, the CPP described Dr. Prempeh's statements, which compared the achievements of President Akufo-Addo to those of Ghana's first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, as a severe misstep. The party emphasized that such comparisons are not only irrelevant but also disrespectful to the legacy of Dr. Nkrumah, a pivotal figure in Ghanaian and African history.

Comrade Wing Comm. Patrick Nelson Sogbodjor, the  Chairperson, Independent Committee, Convention People's Party made this demand in a statement dated July 10, 2024

“Questioning or comparing the contributions of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah to Ghana, Africa, and humanity is a moot question, dead on arrival,” stated the CPP.

They highlighted Nkrumah's enduring legacy, including being named African of the Millennium in 2000 and having monuments in his honor worldwide.

The party also pointed out that Dr. Prempeh himself benefited from Nkrumah's legacy, having studied at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

The CPP referenced a recent admonition from His Royal Highness Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II, who had advised Dr. Prempeh to avoid arrogance and to ensure that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia did not regret choosing him as his running mate. Despite this advice, Dr. Prempeh's recent comments have drawn widespread criticism.

The CPP accused Dr. Prempeh of undermining the historical significance of Nkrumah’s contributions, while also criticizing his comparison of former President John Agyekum Kufuor's leadership to that of President Akufo-Addo.

The party sees this as part of a broader attempt by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to rewrite Ghana's history, citing changes such as the abolition of Republic Day, the renaming of Founder’s Day, and alterations to the educational curriculum.

The CPP has called for immediate action to rectify what they view as a serious blunder.

They demand that Dr. Prempeh resigns from his ministerial position and issue a public apology and retraction. Should he fail to do so, the party urges President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to dismiss Dr. Prempeh from his role as Minister of Energy and calls on Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to remove him as his running mate.

The CPP has warned that if these demands are not met within 24 hours, they will mobilize Ghanaians and Nkrumaists worldwide to protest.

They concluded with a rallying cry, reaffirming their commitment to the legacy of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and the future of Ghana
