NDC calls for audit of ballot booklets ahead of scheduled destruction
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is demanding a thorough audit of ballot booklets scheduled for destruction by the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana.
The call by the NDC has come in the wake of heightened concerns about electoral integrity, particularly in the Western and Eastern Regions.
According to the NDC's Director of Elections and IT, the audit is necessary to mitigate fears of ballot stuffing ahead of the December 7 general elections.
“We shall thoroughly audit each ballot booklet earmarked for destruction before any such action takes place. Considering the volumes involved, this process cannot be rushed or completed today,” a statement Dr Edward Omane Boamah read.
The EC has been accused of losing public trust, with allegations that some ballot booklets might have been leaked to enable ballot stuffing.
The NDC has expressed skepticism about assurances that security features on the ballots will prevent tampering.
“Who examines UV light sensitivity at polling stations during the sorting and counting of ballots?
Security features are meaningless if the system lacks transparency,” the statement added.
The NDC is urging citizens to remain vigilant, calling for the public to “keep eagle eyes” on the EC and political stakeholders to ensure free and fair elections.
The NDC underscored the need for robust measures to restore confidence in the electoral process.
