NCCE condemns Wontumi FM’s Oheneba Asiedu for fake news ahead of Dec. 7 polls
The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has raised concerns about the dangers of disinformation, following the circulation of a video containing false claims about the upcoming December 7 general elections.
The video was reportedly made by Oheneba Nana Asiedu, a presenter with Kumasi-based Wontumi FM.
The presenter had alleged the presidential election will be conducted over two separate days due to the number of aspirants.
The presenter claimed that the first group of candidates will contest on one day, while the rest will be scheduled for a later date.
In a statement, the NCCE categorically dismissed these assertions as “false and misleading,” labelling them as deliberate acts of disinformation designed to confuse voters.
The NCCE clarified the voting process, stating: "Officially, there is only one voting day for the election 2024. Saturday, 7th December, 2024, is the day. Voting starts from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm for both Presidential and Parliamentary Candidates. All qualified Presidential Candidates will be on one ballot, and the electorate will vote for their preferred candidate on the same day."
The Commission condemned the spread of such fake news, emphasising the negative impact on democracy.
"Disinformation is a threat to democracy, and we must collectively reject it," the statement emphasised.
It further urged the public to verify information before sharing and to remain vigilant against attempts to mislead voters.
The NCCE also praised the Ghana Police Service for its swift action in addressing the matter, expressing confidence that the law will take its course to deter similar actions in the future.
"The Commission commends the Ghana Police Service for its swift action in handling the matter. We are assured that the law will take its full course to deter others from taking such actions," the statement added.
