Double-track system not solution to sustaining Free SHS-Opoku -Agyemang
The Vice Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has criticized the government's handling of the double-track secondary education system, claiming it lacks effective solutions to the issues plaguing the Free Senior High School initiative.
Her remarks follow recent comments by Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, who cautioned against an immediate abolition of the double-track system, warning that such a move could jeopardize the educational prospects of many students.
His comments came in response to the NDC’s commitment to end the double-track system if it wins the 2024 elections.
While addressing NDC supporters at Gbiniyiri in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba Constituency to launch her campaign tour in the Savannah Region, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang questioned the government’s stance, stating that the Minister’s caution only confirms that the government has no real solutions for the issues facing the double-track system.
She emphasized that, unlike the NPP, the NDC has thoroughly evaluated the double-track system’s challenges and plans to implement interventions, including the expansion of school infrastructure, to address them.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang highlighted that under the previous NDC administration, the shift system was successfully abolished at the basic school level, and a similar approach would be applied at the secondary level to end the double-track system.
Criticizing the current administration, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang claimed that the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government has presided over the decline of the educational system.
However, she reassured the public that the NDC has pragmatic measures to restore and enhance secondary education.
She urged voters to support the NDC’s Presidential Candidate, John Dramani Mahama, and NDC Parliamentary Candidates in the upcoming December 7 general elections, to ensure a positive transformation in Ghana’s education system.
