Napo addresing trainee nurse in Greater Accra Region

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Vice Presidential Candidate of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called on students of the Korle-Bu Nursing and Midwifery Training College, Accra School of Hygiene, and the Public Health Nursing School to vote massively for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming elections.

During a stakeholder engagement on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, at the Korle-Bu NMTC in the Ablekuma South Constituency of the Greater Accra Region, Dr. Prempeh highlighted the NPP government's achievements in the health sector and outlined Dr. Bawumia’s bold vision for the future.

Dr. Prempeh, affectionately known as “Napo,” recalled the restoration of the nursing trainee allowance, which had been cancelled by the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) government under John Mahama.

"As you yourselves have always maintained, a delayed allowance is much better than a cancelled one," he said.

"We have restored your allowance and are addressing the delays. But John Mahama has made it clear he will never restore the allowance.

If you choose to vote against him because of that, he doesn’t care.

Is that how a leader should respond to legitimate demands?"

He further emphasized that under the NPP government, not only has the trainee allowance been restored, but the flagship Agenda 111 initiative is also underway, with over 100 hospitals being constructed across various districts to improve healthcare delivery.

Many of these hospitals, he added, are nearing completion and will offer employment opportunities to the nursing trainees once they graduate.

"When John Mahama cancelled your allowance, he claimed the funds would be used to build hospitals.

Has he built any? No. However, the NPP has shown that it’s possible to pay your allowance and still build over 100 hospitals to provide you with jobs.

We’ve also abolished the NDC’s three-month pay policy for three years of work, proving that it’s possible to pay your allowance and still keep the lights on."

Dr. Prempeh urged the students to recognize the NPP’s substantial achievements in the health sector and vote for Dr. Bawumia and NPP parliamentary candidates in the upcoming elections to protect these gains and secure a brighter future.
