Suhum MP denies abandoning independent candidacy
Mr Kwadwo Asante, Member of Parliament for Suhum Constituency in the Eastern Region, has strongly refuted claims that he has abandoned his bid to contest the 2024 elections as an independent candidate.
In a statement, the MP dismissed the reports as "fake news," insisting that he remains firmly committed to his independent candidacy.
The controversy follows Mr Asante’s removal from the Majority Caucus WhatsApp platform by Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annor Dompreh, after news of his independent candidacy emerged.
According to Mr. Asante, Mr Annor Dompreh quickly reinstated him on the platform following a Supreme Court ruling on a stay application related to the case.
However, Mr Asante criticized Dompreh’s actions, accusing him of trying to manipulate the situation.
"Mr Annor Dompreh removed me from the Majority Caucus WhatsApp platform because I was going independent.
Immediately after the Speaker of Parliament gave his ruling, Mr Annor Dompreh quickly added me back when the Supreme Court ruled on the stay application.
He thinks he is smart," Mr Asante remarked.
The Suhum MP said he chose to remain silent on the platform after being re-added, but decided to speak out when rumours surfaced claiming he had dropped his independent candidacy.
"It is not true. I am the independent candidate in Suhum, and I have not changed my decision," Mr Asante emphasized, setting the record straight.
