Dec. 7 polls: Political parties to discuss voter roll at IPAC meeting today
The Electoral Commission (EC) will convene an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on Tuesday, 1 October 2024, to discuss concerns surrounding the Voters’ Register ahead of the December 7 general elections.
The meeting, set to take place in Accra, will bring together representatives from all major political parties to ensure transparency and resolve outstanding issues related to the electoral roll.
At the meeting, the EC will outline measures being implemented to rectify errors identified in the register and seek consensus on steps to ensure the integrity of the electoral process.
The forum will also provide an opportunity for political parties to voice their concerns and suggestions on the register and other related matters.
The Voters’ Register has been the subject of growing controversy, with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) calling for a forensic audit.
The NDC raised alarm over claims that voters had been transferred without their consent, sparking concerns about the integrity of the electoral roll.
Responding to the calls for an audit, EC Chairperson Mrs. Jean Mensa described them as premature, noting that the process of finalising the register was ongoing.
In a letter to the NDC, Mrs. Mensa emphasised that "the production of a Final Voters Register is a process, not an event. It requires painstaking effort and processes to arrive at a Final Register."
The EC has taken steps to address discrepancies in the register and plans to conduct an online exhibition of the Provisional Voters’ Register to allow voters to inspect and correct any remaining errors before finalizing the roll.
Mrs. Mensa also confirmed that District Officers are actively implementing decisions and recommendations from District Registration Review Officers.
