Ayawaso West Wuogon MP denies allegations of silencing UG security guard
Lydia Seyram Alhassan, Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon in the Greater Accra Region, has denied allegations linking her to the alleged detention of a University of Ghana(UG) security guard, a matter that has sparked widespread social media debate.
The controversy began on November 27, 2024, when a video surfaced online showing a University of Ghana security guard claiming he had been offered rice and oil to influence his vote.
Despite the alleged inducements, the guard expressed support for another candidate.
Shortly afterwards, a second video emerged, showing the same security guard being escorted into a pickup truck by his colleagues.
This led to speculation that he was being arrested for voicing his political opinion.
In a statement, Ms. Alhassan categorically refuted claims suggesting she orchestrated the guard’s alleged detention to silence him.
She labelled the accusations as “false and malicious propaganda” aimed at tarnishing her reputation.
“I have never silenced dissenting voices or based my engagements on political preferences,” Ms. Alhassan stated.
“This is not only untrue but a calculated attempt to diminish my work and dedication.”
She clarified that her recent interactions with the university’s security team were solely focused on addressing campus safety challenges and improving working conditions for staff.
She emphasized her commitment to creating a secure environment for students, lecturers, and workers.
The MP also reassured her constituents of her dedication to promoting free expression and inclusivity, describing the allegations as baseless and politically motivated.
“I remain committed to serving the Ayawaso West Wuogon community with integrity and transparency,” she concluded.
