The Madina MP, highlighted CHRAJ's advisory opinion which urges the President to address any constitutional concerns

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Madina Francis-Xavier Sosu has called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to assent the Anti-Witchcraft Accusations Bill.

This follows an advisory opinion from the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) on the Bill.

The Bill, passed by Parliament, aims to proscribe witchcraft accusations and enhance protections for vulnerable groups.

A statement issued by the Madina MP, highlighted CHRAJ's advisory opinion which urges the President to address any constitutional concerns and take legislative steps to assent to the Criminal Offences Amendment Bill, 2023 (Anti-Witchcraft Bill).

“The Commission urges His Excellency the President of the Republic to take urgent steps including any legislative steps that will resolve the constitutional concerns raised by H.E. the President in order to assent to the Criminal Offenses Amendment Bill, 2023 (Anti-Witchcraft Bill) to further enhance protection of this vulnerable group and the consolidation of Ghana's human rights record,” CHRAJ stated.

Mr. Sosu, who petitioned CHRAJ along with other relevant institutions on March 28, 2024, expressed gratitude for the Commission's response and reinforced the importance of the Bill.

He emphasised the need for Ghana to adhere to its 1992 Constitution, international laws, and treaties to maintain and enhance its democratic and human rights record.

"I am grateful to the Commission for their succinct response and urge H.E. the President to assent the Anti-Witchcraft Accusations Bill passed by Parliament, to adhere to the 1992 Constitution, various international laws and treaties, and further enhance Ghana's democratic tenets and enviable human rights record,” Mr. Sosu stated.
