Act fast to save lives and properties – Isaac Asiamah urges gov’t
The Chairman of the Works and Housing Committee of Parliament and MP for Atwima Mponua, Isaac Kwame Asiamah has urged Government to as a matter of urgency act fast to commence work on the Keta Sea Defence project to save lives and properties
The former Minister for Youth and Sports made the statement when he led the Committee together with some officials from the Works and Housing Ministry, Ghana Hydrological Authority for a monitoring visit to Keta, Anlo, Ketu Constituencies, the Keta Municipal Assembly, Ho Integrated Recycling and Composting Plant etc.
Mr Asiamah indicated that, Government had secured a World Bank Fund of $150 million for the Coastal Development Project.
"We need to secure and protect our historical heritage along the Coast where we have Forts, Castles, we can't sit down and allow this to be destroyed," he stated.
He expressed regret that for about eight years the Volta River Authority (VRA) has failed to dredge the Volta estuary which has led to tidal waves destroying three communities at Anloga areas.
He disclosed that the Committee will summon VRA to appear before Parliament next week. "They must take responsibility for their actions" he emphasized.
For his part, the ranking Member of the Committee MP for Dormaa West Vincent Oppong Asamoah said Government needs to prioritize and invest more resources to deal with the tidal waves affecting several communities along the coastal lines.
The Committee also called on the Municipal Chief Executives in the constituencies where discussions centered on activities of sand wining, it's impact and how the menace could be curbed.
