Abinkyi market demolition: NDC condemns gov’t inaction over demolition of traders’ shops
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Subin Constituency of the Ashanti region has condemned the government's inaction following the demolition of over 700 traders' shops in the Abinkyi Market, also known as Afia Kobi Market.
The demolition, carried out by a private developer, has left traders and shop owners without a livelihood.
The affected traders and shop owners, who were relocated from the Racecourse market and had purchased the shops from the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) in 2011, petitioned the KMA to intervene.
Despite their appeals, no authorities, including the Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah, and the Kumasi Mayor, Samuel Pyne, have visited the market or taken steps to address the situation.
At a press conference, the Constituency Communications Officer for the NDC, Samuel Owusu Mensah, described the situation as "disheartening, barbaric, disdainful, and inconsiderate."
He criticised the KMA's unconcerned attitude, which has left the traders to suffer.
Mr. Mensah noted such an incident would not have happened if the NDC, led by John Dramani Mahama, was in power."
He promised that the NDC would rebuild the market into a modern facility if they win the upcoming elections while urging the affected traders and Ghanaians to join forces with the NDC to vote out the "incompetent and corrupt" NPP government in the December polls.
Expressing their displeasure with the neglect by the NPP government, some affected traders and shop owners, who identified themselves as NPP members, threatened not to vote for the party in the upcoming elections.
