#2024Polls violence: Mahama vows to probe deaths

President-elect John Dramani Mahama has vowed to investigate the violent incidents that overshadowed Ghana’s 2024 elections if the outgoing administration fails to act.
He gave the assurance during a courtesy call by the European Union (EU) Ambassador to Ghana, Irchad Razaaly, on Thursday, 12 December, in Accra.
While the elections were largely peaceful, tensions in some regions resulted in the tragic deaths of at least three individuals and left several others injured.
“I am happy about the smooth, successful election we had. Unfortunately, there were a few incidents which led to deaths,” Mr. Mahama acknowledged.
“I intend to investigate what led to these deaths. People are culpable, and they need to pay the price for what they have done. I hope this government investigates those incidents, but if they don’t, we will do it when we come to office,” Mr. Mahama revealed.
The President-elect also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to justice, transparency, and the strengthening of Ghana’s bilateral ties with the EU.
He emphasised the importance of honouring existing agreements while exploring avenues to deepen economic and diplomatic cooperation amidst Ghana’s ongoing economic challenges.
“We want to engage the EU as early as possible to look at the details of our cooperation and see how we can tweak it to align with the programme this government wants to undertake. A lot of foreign investment in our country comes from the EU, and we want to deepen that, especially in this economic crisis, where we are shut out from the international capital market,” Mr. Mahama stated.
The EU Ambassador praised Mr. Mahama for his historic appointment of Vice President-elect Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the first woman to hold the position in Ghana’s history.
“Congratulations to you and your running mate for this milestone. We need to acknowledge this move, as well as the organisation and conduct of the election,” The EU ambassador noted.
