Ghana inaugurates new 40-bed hospital at Kpone Katamanso with Czech support

The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, on Wednesday joined Czech President His Excellency Petr Pavel to officially inaugurate the newly completed Kpone Katamanso Municipal Hospital in the Greater Accra Region.
The modern 40-bed facility, outfitted with cutting-edge medical equipment, is one of 12 hospitals initiated two years ago under a nationwide effort to expand access to quality healthcare.
The project reflects a broader policy commitment to bolster healthcare infrastructure across Ghana.
The Kpone Katamanso Hospital features a comprehensive range of services, including an outpatient department, public health wing, surgical suite with operating theatre, recovery and sterilisation units, a maternity ward with delivery and neonatal intensive care units (NICU), a laboratory, pharmacy, and x-ray department.
It also includes dedicated wards for male, female, and pediatric patients, a service block with laundry and storage facilities, and on-site staff accommodation.
As part of the project, the hospital has been fully equipped with medical devices and systems, and includes a one-year post-completion warranty, a maintenance plan, and staff training programmes to ensure smooth operations.
The €75.5 million project was funded by Erste Group Bank AG and Ceska Sporitelna a.s., with an €8.612 million export credit guarantee provided by EGAP—the Czech Republic’s Export Guarantee and Insurance Corporation.
Speaking at the event, Minister Akandoh expressed appreciation to the Czech Republic for its ongoing partnership.
“President Mahama’s government is committed to completing and operationalizing all hospital projects across the country.
We do not believe in opening hospitals only to lock them up, nor in abandoning initiatives started by previous administrations,” Akandoh said.
“Our goal is to ensure every facility serves its intended purpose—providing equitable, accessible healthcare to all Ghanaians.”
The Minister also invited the hospital’s newly assigned doctors, nurses, and support staff to step forward as a symbol of the government’s readiness to activate services immediately.
President Petr Pavel commended Ghana’s commitment to healthcare development and reaffirmed the Czech Republic’s support for further collaboration in the sector.
Dr. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, emphasized the urgency of making newly constructed hospitals operational.
He noted that the remaining 11 facilities under the same initiative would be opened soon.
These upcoming hospitals are located in Jumap, Nkwatia, Kwabeng, Achiase, and Adukrom in the Eastern Region; Suame, Drobonso, Sabronum, Manso Nkwanta, and Twedie in the Ashanti Region; and Mim in the Ahafo Region.
