E/R: Suminakese Banana farmers appeal for help over insect bites

Banana farmers in Suminakese, a farming community in the Kwahu East District of the Eastern Region, are raising concerns over persistent insect bites they attribute to the banana plantations in the area.
According to the farmers, these insect bites—particularly in the mornings—are causing discomfort and could potentially affect their eyesight.
They are calling on the Ministry of Agriculture and the Health Directorate to intervene and address the issue.
The Assembly Member for Suminakese, Seth Anom, stated that the community strongly believes the banana plantations are attracting the insects, making it necessary for authorities to take urgent action.
This concern was highlighted during a free eye screening exercise organized by the Ankoma and Baffour Foundation, which revealed that many farmers in the area suffer from eye-related problems.
Speaking on behalf of the foundation, the Werempehene of Kwahu Aduamoa, Nana Yaw Ankoma Acheampong, said they were motivated to conduct the screening after hearing about the farmers’ struggles.
He urged relevant authorities to investigate the issue and provide a lasting solution to protect the health of the farmers.
