Government has expressed disappointment with Organised Labour’s decision to move forward with a nationwide strike on Thursday, 10 October 2024, despite recent talks and agreements made to tackle the growing issue of illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.

Organised Labour has been urging the president to declare a state of emergency on illegal mining and implement long-term strategies to curb the environmental devastation caused by the practice.

A statement issued by the Information Ministry on Monday, 7 October 2024, signed by the Minister, Fatimatu Abubakar conveyed government's surprise over the planned strike, emphasising the administration’s commitment to fighting illegal mining.

The minister noted that both parties had reached a mutual understanding during their recent discussions.

“We are shocked by Organised Labour’s decision to continue with the strike, especially after the government’s demonstrated commitment to fighting illegal mining,” the statement said.

Government reiterated its support for a proposal calling for all presidential candidates to sign a pact against galamsey.

Also, it announced plans to revoke the contentious Environmental Protection Regulations 2023 (L.I. 2462) when Parliament reconvenes, signaling a readiness to adopt stricter environmental policies.
