UK-based Ghanaians join global anti-galamsey movement, demand immediate action
Ghanaians living in the United Kingdom have added their voices to the growing global campaign against illegal mining, locally known as galamsey, by holding a protest in front of the Ghana High Commission in London.
The protest aimed to highlight the devastating impact of galamsey on the country’s environment, economy, and communities, while expressing solidarity with their fellow citizens back home.
Participants from various walks of life, including students, professionals, and community leaders, expressed their deep concern over the environmental destruction caused by illegal mining.
They noted that galamsey activities have not only ravaged farmlands and polluted vital water bodies but have also imperiled the livelihoods of millions of Ghanaians.
The London protest added an international dimension to the crisis, emphasizing the shared responsibility of Ghanaians abroad to help bring attention to the issue.
Protesters carried placards bearing powerful slogans like “Blood, Gold, Greed!”, “Water No Bi Politics,” and “Stop Illegal Mining Now!”, calling for urgent government intervention to halt the environmental damage.
