UE/R: Tragic ambush in Bawku claims 2 lives, death toll now 19
Two men were tragically ambushed and killed on a road out of Bawku, intensifying the already fraught ethnic conflict that has gripped the region for years.
The victims, identified as a Mamprusi man and a Togolese national, were transporting a body back to Togo when unknown assailants opened fire on their truck, killing both men instantly.
According to local sources, the Togolese man had travelled to Bawku to care for his ailing father, who passed away during their stay.
The father’s body was being transported home when they encountered the fatal attack.
Bawku’s violence, deeply rooted in chieftaincy disputes and ethnic divisions, has recently escalated following the return of a rival chief, reigniting tensions between communities.
Despite increased security presence, the region remains volatile, with ongoing clashes and an atmosphere of fear impacting daily life.
This recent ambush brings the death toll to 19.
