#OccupyJulorbiHouse protest: Police offer security if location is changed
The Ghana Police Service says it will provide security for Democracy Hub during its planned protest from Saturday, 21 to Monday, 23 September 2024.
This will only happen if the organisers agree to relocate the demonstration from the Revolution Square near Jubilee House.
The protest, which seeks to highlight pressing national issues such as socio-economic injustice, unemployment, poverty, corruption, nepotism, and calls for judicial independence, was initially scheduled to take place at the iconic Revolution Square.
However, the Police raised concerns about potential disruptions to public order and safety.
"Following an assessment, we concluded that holding the protest at the Revolutionary Square could affect public order and endanger public defence, public safety, and public health," the Police stated.
The Police requested an alternative location from the organisers, but Democracy Hub refused the suggestion.
As a result, the Police turned to the High Court, which on Wednesday, 18 September 2024, issued an order preventing the protest from being held at the proposed site.
Despite the court order, the Police emphasised that they have not banned the demonstration.
"We wish to state categorically that the Ghana Police Service has not stopped Democracy Hub from embarking on the planned protest. The only disagreement is on their choice of the Revolution Square," the statement explained.
The Police reaffirmed their readiness to secure the event, stating, "We are ready to provide security for the exercise from 21st to 23rd September when a new location is agreed upon between the organizers and the Police."
Discussions between the Police and Democracy Hub are ongoing to finalise an alternative location for the protest, ensuring the event proceeds in a secure environment.
