Ghana National Fire Service introduces robust measures to deal with market fires
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has rolled out a series of strategic measures to enhance fire safety and protect major markets across the country from fire outbreaks.
The initiative underscores the Service's commitment to safeguarding lives and property, especially in the country’s bustling commercial hubs.
Chief Fire Officer Julius A. Kuunuor has directed the deployment of personnel and fire appliances to various markets from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM daily to ensure 24-hour fire protection.
As part of this initiative:
A dedicated task force will patrol markets daily to provide constant vigilance and ensure swift response in case of emergencies. Fire units or posts will be established in key markets to conduct safety education, and regular inspections, and enforce compliance with fire safety protocols. All GNFS personnel assigned to market duties will submit daily Situation Reports (SITREPS) to the National Headquarters Operations platform for review and action. The GNFS will collaborate with market authorities, the Ghana Police Service, and National Security to enhance surveillance and ensure quick responses to potential fire incidents. The GNFS emphasized that these measures, effective immediately, form part of a broader strategy to mitigate fire risks in markets, which are crucial to the country’s economy and livelihoods.
Speaking on the initiative, Divisional Officer II Desmond E. Ackah, Head of Public Relations at the GNFS, noted that the Service is committed to ensuring the safety and security of markets and urged stakeholders, including market authorities, traders, and the general public, to cooperate fully.
“This initiative is not only about fire prevention but also about creating a safer environment for economic activities.
The success of this program depends on the cooperation of all stakeholders,” he stated.
The GNFS’s proactive approach reflects its dedication to addressing market fire outbreaks, a recurring challenge that has caused significant economic losses in the past.
