Order restored in Ejura following violent mob attack on police station

The Ghana Police Service has restored calm in Ejura, Ashanti Region, following a violent mob attack on the Ejura Police Station in the early hours of Saturday, January 11, 2025.
The unrest was triggered by the death of a suspect in police custody, sparking widespread protests in the community.
The incident began on the evening of Friday, January 10, 2025, when police arrested a male suspect on allegations of theft. He was detained at the Ejura Police Station for further investigation.
At approximately 2:20 am on Saturday, the suspect complained of feeling unwell.
Police promptly transported him to the Ejura Government Hospital for medical attention.
Tragically, he passed away while under medical care.
News of the suspect’s death caused outrage in the community.
As police prepared to transfer the body to the mortuary for preservation and an autopsy, an angry mob gathered, storming the Ejura Police Station and setting parts of it ablaze, resulting in extensive damage.
In a parallel act of defiance, another faction of the mob invaded the Ejura Government Hospital, forcibly taking the deceased’s body.
This act further escalated tensions in the area.
In response, the police engaged with community elders and opinion leaders to de-escalate the situation.
Their intervention successfully prevented further violence, and order was gradually restored.
Fortunately, no casualties were reported during the attack.
To ensure stability, personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces were deployed to support the police in maintaining order. The Ghana National Fire Service also intervened to extinguish the flames at the police station.
The Ghana Police Service has assured the public that investigations are underway to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
Authorities have vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice and emphasized their commitment to ensuring peace and security in Ejura.
The police have appealed to the public to remain calm and cooperate fully with ongoing investigations, urging all stakeholders to work together to maintain stability in the community.
