Organised Labour is set to convene on Tuesday, October 1, to determine the next steps for their planned nationwide protest regarding government's handling of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

The unions are expressing their frustration over government's inaction in addressing the environmental devastation caused by illegal mining activities.

Several unions and associations previously indicated their intention to protest if the President did not declare a state of emergency to address the ongoing destruction of water bodies and forest reserves by the end of September.

Mr  Abdul Moomin Gbana, General Secretary of the Ghana Mine Workers Union, highlighted the critical nature of Tuesday’s meeting in shaping the future course of action.

He emphasised that the gathering will focus on finalizing decisions regarding the protests.

Mr. Gbana affirmed Organised Labour's commitment to protecting the environment and called for stronger government measures to combat illegal mining, which poses a significant threat to the country's natural resources.

The unions hope the planned protest will compel the government to prioritise the fight against galamsey.

“The leadership of Organised Labour has agreed to meet on Tuesday, October 1, to review the developments over the period and consolidate our position moving forward,” he stated.

“Our original plan remains intact, and I believe Tuesday’s meeting will endorse our demands made to the president.”

He spoke in an interview with Accra-based Citi FM on Sunday, September 29.
