Floods take over homes and streets of Ablekuma

The gathering of clouds has now become one of the most dreadful moments for residents of Ablekuma Agape Top, in the Anyaa Sowutuom Constituency of the Greater Accra Region.
This is because the slightest downpour causes major flooding in the area, cutting off communities, taking over homes and bringing economic activity to a halt.
The situation which has persisted for years has forced some residents to abandon their homes while those putting up buildings have had to abandon their projects.
Uncompleted buildings have now been taken over by toads swimming and revelling in the pool of water that has invaded compounds.
The stagnant water has also become a fertile breeding grounds for mosquitoes, increasing the incidence of malaria outbreak in the vicinity.
A resident of the area, Mrs Jessica Ampofo tells Class News’ Joshua Kodjo Mensha that numerous attempts to get the attention of authorities to the situation have landed on deaf ears.
This has forced residents to park their vehicles about 100 to 200 meters away from their homes to avoid causing damage to their engines by driving through the floodwater.
Commercial drivers who attempt to move through the flood often have to depend on the benevolence of the youth to help them to push the broken down vehicles.
The situation is further compounded by the poor nature of roads in the area which inconveniences residents gravely.
The untarred road network from Pentecost junction all the way to Agape Down is a great source of worry as motorists have to visit their mechanics on a weekly basis.
The roads become unmotorable leaving pedestrians stranded when it rains.
Residents also have to battle the effect of the dusty roads in the dry season with fears of airborne diseases.
