Dec. polls: Feed yourself with balanced news -Peace Council to electorate
The National Peace Council is calling on the Ghanaian electorate, particularly political party supporters, to seek balanced news as a means of safeguarding the nation’s peace.
According to the Peace Council, consuming unbalanced or partisan news poses a significant risk to national stability, especially as the country approaches the December 7, elections.
Speaking on Accra 100.5 FM’s mid-day news on Thursday, August 29, 2024, Rev. Dr. Ernest Adu Gyamfi, Chairman of the National Peace Council, expressed concern over the increasing trend of party supporters consuming media content exclusively from outlets affiliated with their respective political parties.
He highlighted that National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters often tune in to NDC-affiliated stations, while New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters do the same with NPP-affiliated outlets.
“This creates a situation where party supporters are exposed to one-sided news,” Rev. Dr. Adu Gyamfi explained, adding that this exposure to biased information could fuel propaganda and misinformation, leading to heightened tensions during and after the elections.
He emphasized that this trend is dangerous for the country’s peace and urged the Ghanaian electorate to make an effort to consume balanced news from diverse sources.
“By doing so, we can prevent the spread of propaganda and avoid being brainwashed,” he said, stressing the importance of accessing accurate and comprehensive information during the election period.
