Cape Coast: Reluctance to vocational training contributor to high unemployment rate - C/R TVET Coordinator
Mr Patrick Adu Sarfo, the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Coordinator for the Central Region, has highlighted Cape Coast's alarming unemployment rates, attributing them to a reluctance among residents to pursue vocational training.
He spoke during the inaugural graduation ceremony of the Akotokyirman Vocational Training Institute in Cape Coast, where six make-up artists graduated as full-time professionals.
Mr Sarfo expressed concern that unlike residents of Swedru, Assin Fosu, and Dunkwa-On-Offin in the Central Region, who readily embrace vocational training, Cape Coast residents, despite being the regional capital, show less interest in such opportunities.
He commended the graduates for showcasing the skills acquired at the institute and encouraged others to follow suit by enrolling in vocational training programmes for future career prospects.
Additionally, Mr Sarfo urged parents to actively support their wards by providing essential materials needed for effective learning.
Nana Kojo Nyarko Arhin, Mpuntuhene of Akotokyir, acknowledged the significance of the graduation ceremony, considering it a precursor to the institute's main graduation event.
He encouraged young men in the community to consider enrolling in female-dominated trades like make-up artistry, manicure, and pedicure, emphasizing the shifting gender dynamics in vocational fields.
Miss Evelyn Arthur, a graduate of the Akotokyirman Vocational Training Institute, emphasised the importance of vocational training for youth, especially women, urging them to pursue skills that could empower them financially and reduce dependence on men
