The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, in collaboration with various women’s organizations, marked International Women’s Day with a vibrant celebration in Accra.

Although the global event is typically observed on March 8, this year’s commemoration was held on March 7 to avoid coinciding with the weekend.

International Women’s Day serves as a platform to honour women’s achievements across various fields and advocate for accelerated gender equality.

The event called on individuals and organizations to work collectively towards empowering women and ensuring their contributions are recognized.

The celebration kicked off with a procession from Kwame Nkrumah Circle, winding through the streets of Accra before culminating at the premises of the Gender Ministry.

Addressing the media, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, Minister of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, highlighted the importance of acknowledging women’s socio-economic, cultural, and political contributions.

“The celebration today ensures that women’s voices are heard, their efforts recognized, and their contributions properly rewarded,” she stated.

Dr. Wilfred Ochan, Country Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), also commended President John Dramani Mahama for appointing a female Vice President. He described the move as a significant step towards gender inclusion and a demonstration of the government’s commitment to promoting women’s leadership and equality.
