2024 WASSCE successful despite malpractice incidents – WAEC
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the successful completion of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates, despite reports of exam malpractice.
The examination began on Monday, 5 August 2024, with Visual Arts project work and concluded on Friday, 20 September 2024.
A total of 460,611 candidates, comprising 212,954 males and 247,657 females from 1,003 schools, registered for the examination, which took place across 1,000 centres nationwide.
WAEC monitored the examination process closely, enlisting the help of agents, personnel from the National Intelligence Bureau, Ghana Police Service, National Security, and the Ghana Education Service.
Significant oversight was also provided by key stakeholders, including the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT).
In a statement issued on Thursday, 26 September 2024, WAEC noted that while most supervisors, invigilators, and candidates complied with examination regulations, several incidents of malpractice were observed.
These included the photocopying and distribution of answers by some supervisors and invigilators, as well as the smuggling of unauthorized materials into exam halls.
Additionally, instances of candidates bringing mobile phones into examination rooms were reported.
“The Council will take appropriate action to ensure that all examination officials and stakeholders who were found culpable are sanctioned in accordance with the appropriate provisions of the rules and regulations governing the conduct of the examination,” the statement assured.
WAEC expressed appreciation to stakeholders who reported attempts at cheating and reaffirmed its commitment to conducting credible and fair examinations, regardless of the challenges faced during the process.
