Wontumi presenter granted bail after alleged publication of false news
Kumasi-based radio and television presenter Oheneba Nana Asiedu has been granted bail by the Ghana Police Service following his arrest on Saturday, November 23, 2024, on charges related to publishing false news.
Oheneba was summoned by the Ashanti Regional Police Command on Friday, November 22, after allegedly encouraging voters to cast ballots for Presidential Candidates on separate days in the upcoming December general elections on Wontumi FM /TV.
His statements, which circulated widely on social media, were deemed by police to be "false and likely to disturb public peace."
Authorities expressed concern that his comments could create confusion among voters and erode confidence in the electoral process.
According to Ghana's electoral laws, voting for all candidates occurs on a single day, and the police flagged the presenter's comments as a deliberate attempt to mislead the public.
The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) condemned the incident, stressing the need for accurate information to ensure peace and stability during elections, and encouraged the public to rely on official channels for updates.
The police reiterated their commitment to maintaining a peaceful election and cautioned the media to avoid spreading unverified information.
Investigations are ongoing to assess the potential impact and intent of the presenter's remarks.
As part of his bail conditions, Oheneba Nana Asiedu is required to report to the police periodically.
