National Security operatives have successfully traced and confiscated 40 of the missing containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

An Indian national has been arrested in connection with the case.

According to preliminary investigations, the suspect claims he purchased the containers last year.

Authorities are now working to verify his claims and identify those involved in the alleged sale.

The recovery of the containers marks a significant breakthrough in ongoing efforts to unravel the circumstances surrounding their disappearance.

Further investigations are expected to lead to more arrests as security agencies intensify their probe.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Energy and Green Transitions, John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced that a criminal investigation will be launched into the disappearance of over 1,300 Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) containers at the Tema Harbour.

He made this known in a Facebook post on Thursday, 26 March, where he provided details of an investigative report on the matter.

According to Mr Jinapor, during the transition process, the outgoing NPP administration had revealed that approximately 3,000 ECG containers were being held at the Tema Harbour due to the company’s inability to clear them.

However, upon assuming office and visiting the port, he was presented with a different figure of 2,500 containers, which had accumulated a demurrage cost of GHS 1,500,000,000.

The inconsistency in these figures led the Minister to establish an investigative committee to verify the circumstances surrounding the containers.

“The committee’s report, which was presented to me, confirmed that over 1,300 containers were indeed missing—contrary to the narrative given by the previous administration,” Mr Jinapor stated.

Describing the findings as highly concerning, the Minister emphasised the need for accountability and swift action.

“Criminal investigations will be launched immediately, and the perpetrators will surely be prosecuted,” he declared, signalling the government’s commitment to addressing the issue.

The revelation has raised serious concerns about transparency and procurement practices within the ECG
