GCAG congratulates president-elect Mahama, expressing confidence he can reverse galamsey’s effects
The Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey (GCAG) has extended its “heartfelt congratulations to H.E. John Dramani Mahama on a resounding victory in the 2024 general election”.
“This landslide win is a testament to Ghanaians' trust in your leadership to address critical national issues, particularly the menace of illegal and irresponsible mining (galamsey),” the coalition said in its Friday, December 13, 2024, statement, signed by convener Kenneth Ashigbey.
“Your unwavering commitment to fighting galamsey and restoring the integrity of Ghana’s environment has been evident in your party’s manifesto and public engagements.
“The Coalition commends your focus on reversing the devastating consequences of galamsey on our water bodies, forests, and communities – failures that have plagued past administrations.”
The statement continued by outlining some “bold and immediate actions” expected of Mr Mahama’s administration to reverse the effects of illegal mining in Ghana:
* Immediately halt all mining in forest reserves and river bodies across the country to usher in an era of restoration aligned with your commitment to 'RESTORE GHANA'.
* Hold perpetrators of illegal mining accountable, including addressing the lawlessness associated with companies like Akonta Mining Ltd.
* Complete the repeal process for LI 2462, which remains a significant obstacle in the fight against illegal mining. This action will be in conformity with your promise to stop all mining in forests and river bodies across the country.
“We also call on your government to expand the 120-day social contract initiatives with Ghanaians, including your specific commitments to tackle galamsey, as signed in your pledge to address this national crisis,” the statement said.
“We recognise that combating the galamsey menace seriously and comprehensively at this stage will require some intense emergency measures.”
The Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey underlined it remained “optimistic” that Mr Mahama’s “leadership will mark a turning point in Ghana's environmental governance”.
“We are ready and committed to partnering with your administration to achieve our shared vision of a healthy and sustainable environment for all Ghanaians. This is a vision we believe you also share,” the coalition assured.
“Once again, congratulations on your well-deserved victory. Together, we can secure the future of Ghana's environment and uphold its people's expectations.”
