‘When NDC is in power, a lot of things work in sports’ – Iconic cheerleader Grace Ashly

“When NDC is in power, a lot of things work in sports,” music star Obaa Yaa Grace Ashly has said.
Guesting on Accra 100.5 FMs’ Ayekoo Ayekoo midmorning show, she was reacting to the National Democratic Congress returning to power led by President John Mahama.
Host Nana Romeo had asked if she was open to recording new cheer songs for the Black Stars.
During NDC eras, she said, “I’m able to work. These are things we often take for granted but I’m able to get some minor opportunities to work for the Black Stars.”
The Gospel star noted NDC periods like in 2010 when she had great assistance from “our father Julius Debrah, the [current] Chief of Staff,” including footing her ticket to fly to South Africa to support the team at the World Cup, and in 2014 when she was made a Black Stars ambassador.
She contentedly said “by God’s grace, we have people in the NDC” who were “human and respectful of humans.
“Someone like Yaw Ampofo Ankrah. He makes me proud, whether we are in power or not. That guy respects what I do for sports. He calls to speak to me, he’s called to celebrate me before on his programme. We were together in South Africa. I’ve been to his home. He checks on me and what I have in mind for sports. He knows what’s in me. He’s one of the people – I thank God has been given a position. I know it’ll help us.”
Yaw Ampofo Ankrah has been appointed the new Director General at the National Sports Authority (NSA).
A renowned cheerleader for the Black Stars, Grace Ashly was optimistic with such people at the helm of affairs, “everything will flourish.
“And when things flourish, it affects individuals. When God blesses a community, it is not the houses that are blessed but the people.”
She urged nonpartisan and patriotic support for Ghana’s football campaigns.
“And so no matter where we’re from, let’s pray that God helps the NDC succeed in this new term, to affect everyone. If you want it to fail, you’ll fail as an individual, too. We only need to pray for God’s help. No matter the situation, we’re all working for the benefit of the country. We’re not discriminating but where there is a good chance, we’ll point it out without hesitation, pray about it and talk about it,” she said.
The singer assured fans, some of which, she said, had flooded her phone with enquiries and requests, that a new Black Stars cheer song would surely come after “prayers on the park for God to speak.
“God will do it. The song will come.”
She indicated record producer Roro had reached out to her concerning such an endeavour, too.
She appealed for help from national leaders, especially in football, noting such recognisiton and assistance went a long way to encouraging people like her.
“Their help will be very much appreciated. We’re the ones who proudly put the flag around our waist and go from market to market to rally support for the team. We have a match tomorrow. If things were as they should be, the national flag would have been everywhere by now in enthusiastic anticipation. I pray God makes us experience such an era again.”
Ghana’s men’s senior team faces Chad tomorrow, Friday, March 21, 2025, at the Accra (Ohene Gyan) Sports Stadium. On March 24, the Black Stars will take on Madagascar in Morocco. Both matches are 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
