Mawuli Semevo succumbs to burn injuries, dies

Celebrated actor Mawuli Semevo has died, after suffering a burns accident 13 days ago.

"Beyond Burns International got an SOS that something unfortunate has happened. We came here today, and veteran actor Mawuli Semevo has been involved in a severe fire accident. I came here to see him, and his life is hanging in the balance," Judith Addison of Beyond Burns International said in a video when the accident occured.

"He has suffered burns up to 44% of his body. He has respiratory injuries and cannot breathe properly. This is very serious. From his head to his legs. Everywhere caught fire and he has lost all his hair."

Edinam Atasti, a veteran actress, confirmed the news and shared a mobile money number, soliciting for support for Mr Semevo. 

The film and theatre star Mawuli Semevo passed away on Thursday, February 20, 2025, at the Ridge Hospital, where he was receiving treatment. He was 63.

A Stab in the Dark in one of the classic films he starred in.

George Quaye, a star actor and Creative Lead for Image Bureau, eulogised Semevo on Facebook, thus: "In shadows deep, the stage now stands so bare. The laughter fades, replaced by heavy air…"

"A heart that danced through every tale and role, now rests in peace. In sorrow’s sad grip. Baba Fakunle, Uncle Mawuli. Ei! Hmmm," he mourned, adding visuals of Semevo playing Baba Fakunle from the The Gods Are Not to Blame, staged by Quaye's Image Bureau and Naa Ashorkor's April's Production at the National Theatre.
