GMX App not government-funded: GMX Multimedia exec
The Director of Marketing and Communications at GMX Multimedia, Akisi Ackah, has explained the role of government in the Ghana Music Xperience (GMX) App rollout.
According to her, the government's assistance is mostly in terms of "operational" and "regulatory" support and "not necessarily funds".
Madam Ackah said this challenging the notion the music streaming App was funded by the government of Ghana.
She spoke to Hitz FM.
She explained the heart-shaped GMX App was aimed at "addressing some industry concerns" including royalty collection challenges. Thus, the Ghana Music Rights Organization (GHAMRO) was a necessary partner of theirs.
She noted, since "GHAMRO works in connection with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture," that was how "the partnership [with government] comes in, that's where the support comes in".
"So the government, through the ministry, is supporting us with the regulatory environment which goes to support the whole industry at large, with regards to issues like piracy and connecting issues around that," she added.
When the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, led the launch of the GMX App, Wednesday, October 30, 2024, at De Icon Centre, East Legon, he said: "The work has been completed and we have joint work between MUSIGA, GHAMRO, music producers and the private sector. We are going to support this and make sure that we take care of the development expenses related to this platform."
According to Akisi Ackah, Dr Bawumia was not talking about the GMX App's streaming abilities but rather GHAMRO's monitoring abilities thereon.
"GMX is an integrated tool but there is a GHAMRO component of the tool that is owned by GHAMRO and that is what [Dr Bawumia] was referring to with regards to the 'development expenses'. Not the streaming tool - it's the GHAMRO bit of it," she said.
Designed by Omni Strategies, the GMX App is owned by GMX Multimedia, and comes into full operation in January 2025.
