Tax lawyer advises President Mahama to increase betting tax by 20%, not scrap it

Tax Lawyer Theophilus Tawiah has urged President John Mahama to increase the betting tax and not abolish it.

Speaking on TV3’s The Agenda, he worried over how rampant betting had become, attracting hordes of Ghanaian youth and adults.

Thus, the University of Professional Studies-Accra (UPSA) law lecturer advised a 20% increment.

“Betting tax should be increased to 20 per cent to discourage person who bet,” he said.

Aiming to fulfil President John Mahama’s campaign promise from 2024, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, the Finance Minister, emphasised the betting tax would be scrap. He said this when he appeared for vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee.
