Sports Scientist Berlinda Plange advocates for biomechanics to reduce sports injuries

A sports scientist and biomechanics expert, Berlinda Plange, is calling for the integration of biomechanics into sports management in Ghana to help reduce injuries during gameplay.
Speaking on Accra 100.5 FM’s sports analysis programme hosted by Paa Kwesi PKay on Saturday, January 4, 2025, Ms. Plange explained that biomechanics involves the study and analysis of movement during sports activities.
She described it as a scientific approach that helps athletes master their movements, thereby minimizing the risk of injuries.
“Injuries are inevitable in sports, but the adoption of biomechanics has proven to significantly reduce them worldwide,” she said.
Ms. Plange emphasized that while having quality pitches and facilities is important, proper management of athletes through science-backed practices is essential to prevent injuries and ensure productivity.
She highlighted the transformative role of science in modern sports, urging Ghanaian sports disciplines to adopt best practices to keep up with global standards.
“Biomechanics ensures not only the physical well-being of athletes but also their mental readiness on the field.
Data collection and analysis are crucial in injury management and prevention,” she added.
She also pointed out that Ghana has been lagging behind in utilizing biomechanics in sports, which has hindered the country’s progress in managing athletes’ performance and injury prevention effectively.

Ms. Plange concluded by advocating for sports teams and organizations to adopt biomechanics and other scientific methods to enhance athlete performance and reduce the toll of injuries on productivity.
