The rerun of the Walewale parliamentary primary for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has ended in turmoil after police seized ballot boxes, leaving the outcome in limbo for the second time.

Voting, which had already been delayed for several hours, wrapped up around 5 p.m. on Monday, 8 September 2024.

However, the situation escalated when the police abruptly removed the ballot boxes during the sorting process, halting the count.

The day was fraught with sporadic disturbances, including allegations of military personnel assaulting individuals at the polling station.

Dr Kabiru, a key candidate, and his team raised concerns about the choice of venue and the lack of communication regarding arrangements.

Contrary to expectations, the sorting and counting were conducted behind closed doors in a church room.

The chairman of the election committee later disclosed that an unknown individual disrupted the process, leading to the arrest of the suspect.

Expressing frustration, Dr Kabiru questioned the democratic integrity of the election process within the NPP.

His supporter, constituency chairman Mohammed Muniru Janda, claimed Dr Kabiru was in the lead before the disruption and expressed doubts about the security and fairness of the ballots.

On Monday 2 September 2024, the Tamale High Court, presided over by Justice Richard Kogjawah, declared the initial results void, citing flaws in the election process, including irregularities, impersonation, and over-voting.

The court's decision mandates a fresh primary to rectify these issues.

In response to the court's ruling, the party issued a statement signed by its General Secretary detailing the new election schedule.
