The Electoral Commission (EC) recorded 778,447 new voters in the recent limited registration exercise, bringing the total number of valid voters on the register to over 18.6 million.

This was disclosed by the EC chairperson, Jean Mensa when she updated Parliament on the commission’s preparations towards the upcoming 7 December polls.

The EC chair reiterated a mop-up exercise is scheduled for Thursday, 1 August to Saturday, 3 August 2024, in all district offices and the newly created Guan district to ensure that all eligible voters are registered.

She noted the voter exhibition exercise has been rescheduled to August to accommodate this mop-up exercise.

Reflecting on the challenges faced during the limited voter registration, the EC chair attributed the violence to the guarantor system, which saw individuals bussed in by others.

As a solution, the EC emphasised it will continue to advocate for the Ghana Card to be the sole identification document for voter registration.

To support the electoral process, the EC has recruited 210,000 officials who will undergo training to effectively carry out their duties.

The EC chair also highlighted that the Commission now has complete data on all recruited staff, ensuring better management and coordination.
