VP Opoku-Agyemang's women, people living with disabilities empowerment programme launches this year – Pres. Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has said Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang’s empowerment programme for women and people living with disabilities will be launched this year.
He said this during his February 27, 2025, State of the Nation Address (SONA) delivered on the floor of Parliament.
Mr Mahama said the programme would target all manner of vulnerable people, too.
He said the initiative would not only support the aforementioned groups with money but also develop their skills, giving them confidence to venture into various forms of entrepreneurship.
“Mr Speaker, Her Excellency the Vice President’s empowerment for women and people living with disabilities programme will, also, be launched this year. The programme will target women and people with disabilities and other vulnerable groups to build their capacity and offer them access to finance to create their own jobs,” the president said.
When President Mahama was declared the winner of the presidential election on December 9, 2024, Prof Opoku-Agyemang, his running mate and Ghana's first female Vice President, declared she would use her position "to hold the door open" for other women, highlighting her appreciation of the historic moment and her dedication to women empowerment.
On February 3, 2025, her Facebook page carried this message, also, “Over the week, I met with representatives from Star Ghana Foundation. The representatives reaffirmed their commitment to supporting national development. They also emphasized the need for social protection, improved governance, philanthropy, volunteerism, and equitable access to education and healthcare. As they stated, these sectors face infrastructure deficits and, thus, present peculiar challenges to girls.
“I expressed my appreciation for their efforts and stressed the importance of collaboration. There is a need for strong educational infrastructure, preventive healthcare through public awareness, and better support for volunteerism. Additionally, I referenced the increasingly transactional nature of society and the need for meaningful youth engagement to foster national identity and development.”
