The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has underscored the need for genuine actions to uphold the Peace Pact for the 2024 general elections, cautioning that pledges without corresponding deeds will undermine the process.

Addressing the Peace Pact signing ceremony in Accra on November 28, 2024, Mahama highlighted mistrust and insincerity among key stakeholders as major obstacles to peaceful elections.

Drawing on incidents such as the 2020 general elections and the violent Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election, Mahama expressed concerns about the credibility of some commitments, arguing that such events have eroded public trust in the electoral system.

“It is commendable to pledge peace and recite beautiful platitudes,” Mahama remarked.

“But without sincere actions from all stakeholders, especially those in authority, these pledges will remain empty words, and mistrust will continue to undermine our democracy.”

The former president called on the government and all stakeholders to match their words with genuine efforts, emphasizing that Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of peace in Africa is at stake.

He warned that failure to implement concrete measures could render the Peace Pact meaningless.

“The experiences from the last general elections and the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election raise serious questions about the sincerity of some commitments made today,” Mahama said.

He concluded by urging all parties to prioritize Ghana’s stability by ensuring that actions reflect the spirit of the Peace Pact, reinforcing public confidence in the electoral process.
