President Mahama streamlines gov't, sticks to 23 ministries

President John Dramani Mahama has announced a significant reduction in the number of government ministries, scaling down from 30 to 23 as part of a comprehensive plan to improve public service delivery and reduce operational costs.
This decision, outlined in an Executive Instrument issued on January 9, 2025, fulfills a key campaign promise by President Mahama to streamline governance and establish a more results-oriented administration.
During his campaign, the President pledged to limit the size of government, targeting efficiency and accountability while reducing the financial burden on the state. This latest move forms part of broader efforts to restructure Ghana’s governance framework and enhance the effectiveness of public sector operations.
The Executive Instrument, dated January 9, 2025, cites section 11(3) of the Civil Service Act, 1993 (P.N.D.C.L. 327), as the legal foundation for the realignment.
The Act empowers the President to reorganize government ministries and agencies to optimize civil service performance.
By consolidating ministries and cutting redundancies, the Mahama administration seeks to create a governance structure that is not only leaner but also more focused on delivering tangible outcomes for Ghanaians.
This move has been widely viewed as a positive step towards promoting accountability, cost-efficiency, and streamlined decision-making within the public sector.
