Parliamentary proceedings on Friday, January 24, were abruptly disrupted after members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority Caucus staged a protest, forcing the Speaker to suspend sitting for 30 minutes to restore order.

The commotion erupted following the presentation of the business statement for the upcoming week by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga.

Shortly after the statement, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin raised objections, criticizing the omission of a critical issue from the agenda.

He reminded the House that former Majority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson had previously assured Parliament that the violence surrounding the Ablekuma North parliamentary election would be addressed.

Expressing frustration over the lack of provisions in the business statement to discuss this and other incidents of election-related violence, the Minority MPs escalated their protest—standing, banging their tables, and chanting, “No Ablekuma North, no government business.”

Some lawmakers also held placards with various inscriptions, further intensifying the chaos.

Second Deputy Speaker Andrew Asiamah Amoako struggled to regain order as the uproar grew louder.

With no resolution in sight, he suspended the session for 30 minutes.

When proceedings resumed, Afenyo-Markin addressed his caucus, urging them to halt the protest, allowing the business statement to be considered without further interruptions.
