Omane Boamah urges Akufo-Addo to pay IPPs with same urgency as payment for his luxury jet travels
Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Director of Elections and IT for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has issued a strong critique of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s handling of the energy sector, particularly regarding unpaid debts to Independent Power Producers (IPPs).
Dr. Boamah called for the same urgency in addressing the energy crisis as the President allegedly showed during payment for his luxury private jet travels.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, October 16, Dr. Boamah expressed concern over the government's failure to manage the energy sector, despite inheriting stable infrastructure from former President John Dramani Mahama’s administration.
He warned that the growing financial challenges faced by IPPs if left unresolved, could lead to another round of power outages, commonly known as "dumsor."
“The current administration has no excuse for the state of the energy sector," Dr. Boamah said. "Mahama fixed dumsor and left behind numerous power plants, yet Ghanaians are facing blackouts again.
Akufo-Addo had the audacity to use taxpayers’ money for luxurious private jet trips, but where is that same audacity when it comes to paying the IPPs?”
Dr. Boamah urged IPPs to take a bold stance and demand immediate payment for their services, warning that delaying action until a possible Mahama presidency would only deepen the financial crisis in the energy sector.
“Don’t sit on the debts! Be bold and demand it now. Avoid hidden debts!” he emphasized, calling on the power producers to push for their rights before the situation worsens.
He also highlighted the Energy Sector Levy Act (ESLA), introduced during Mahama’s tenure, as a key tool designed to clear legacy debts owed to IPPs.
However, he accused the NPP government of mismanaging ESLA and engaging in corruption, which he said had diverted funds meant to address the energy sector’s challenges.
In a related point, Dr. Boamah contrasted the cost of transporting the Ameri thermal plant to Ghana under Mahama with the cost of relocating the same plant from Accra to Kumasi under Akufo-Addo, describing the latter transaction as unnecessarily expensive and a prime example of financial mismanagement.
Dr. Boamah concluded by urging Ghanaians to vote for John Dramani Mahama in the upcoming elections, framing the choice as a way to punish corruption and recover public funds allegedly misappropriated under the NPP administration.
He also called for an "Operation Recover All Loot (O.R.A.L.)" initiative to reclaim stolen public resources and restore transparency in governance.
