Northern Regional Minister-designate pledges to curb youth migration

The Northern Regional Minister-designate, Adolf John Ali, has pledged to tackle the issue of youth migration from the northern region to the southern sector, particularly Accra, in search of better opportunities.

Speaking during his vetting, Mr. Ali acknowledged that the persistent migration of young people is driven by limited job opportunities, lack of resources, and poor living conditions.

To address this, he outlined plans to create employment opportunities and improve living standards in the northern region to discourage the need for migration.

His proposed approach includes investing in education and skills training, promoting entrepreneurship, and supporting local businesses to provide sustainable livelihoods for the youth.

He emphasized the importance of addressing the root causes of migration, such as poverty, inequality, and inadequate access to essential services like healthcare and education.

Referring to a previous initiative by the erstwhile New Patriotic Party (NPP) government to train head porters (Kayayei) in the Greater Accra Region, Mr. Ali stressed that such programmes should be implemented in the native communities rather than in Accra.

This, he noted, would equip young people with skills and opportunities within their home regions, reducing the incentive to migrate.
