Nduom accuses gov't of deliberately targeting political opponents' businesses

Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, founder of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) and Chairman of Group Nduom, has expressed deep frustration over the collapse of his businesses in Ghana, particularly his former GN Bank.
In a Facebook Live conversation on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, Dr. Nduom accused the current administration of deliberately targeting his companies due to his status as a political opponent.
Reflecting on the differences between Ghana and the United States, Dr. Nduom cited billionaire Elon Musk as an example.
“Elon Musk disagrees with President Joe Biden and even campaigns for his opponents.
Yet, his businesses continue to thrive, and he benefits from government programmes and grants,” he remarked.
“No one is saying, ‘destroy his businesses because he supports another political party.’”
Dr. Nduom contrasted this with the climate in Ghana, arguing that such political targeting would harm the nation.
He voiced concern over the impact of partisan decisions on business viability, saying, “Why do we do this to ourselves here in Ghana?
Because someone disagrees politically, their businesses must suffer?
Their employees must go home?
It should not be this way.”
The businessman’s GN Bank was one of many affected in 2017, following the Nana Akufo-Addo administration’s restructuring of the banking sector, which led to the creation of the Consolidated Bank of Ghana.
Dr. Nduom has previously spoken out on the issue, insisting that political disagreements should not justify the shutdown of businesses, especially those that provide livelihoods to many Ghanaians.
