Napo reaffirms commitment to renaming UPSA after founder Nana Opoku Ampomah
The Vice Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, has reaffirmed the government’s pledge to rename the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) in honour of its founder, Nana Opoku Ampomah.
Dr. Prempeh made this assurance during a visit to Nana Ampomah, the Chief of Amoafo in the Ashanti Region’s Bekwai Constituency, as part of his campaign tour in the region.
Nana Opoku Ampomah, who celebrated his 95th birthday on August 28, 2023, is the visionary behind what has become UPSA.
Despite his monumental contributions to education, the renaming of the university in his honour—a promise first made by President Nana Akufo-Addo on April 25, 2018—remains unfulfilled.
The announcement was initially made at UPSA’s Fourth Special Congregation, during which the institution awarded Nana Opoku Ampomah an honorary doctorate for his significant contributions to Ghanaian education.
Dr. Prempeh, also known as "Napo," reassured that the legal and constitutional procedures necessary for renaming the institution as the "Opoku-Ampomah University of Professional Studies" are in progress.
He emphasized that the government remains committed to fulfilling this promise.
In addition to this, Dr. Prempeh highlighted the government's development plans for the Amansie East District, assuring the community that efforts to divide the district to ensure improved infrastructure, power stability, and healthcare are underway.
He also reiterated Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s initiatives aimed at creating jobs and driving economic growth.
During his visit, Dr. Prempeh called on the community to continue supporting Dr. Bawumia and Parliamentary Candidate Ralph Poku-Adusei for a decisive victory in the upcoming December elections, emphasizing the need for sustained development in the region.
The Krontihene of Amoafo, in the Bekwai Constituency, also urged the government to expedite the renaming process to honour Nana Opoku Ampomah's enduring legacy.
