NPP’s claim of winning nearly half of Volta votes insults intelligence of Voltarians – NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Volta Region has rebuked the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) goal to secure 500,000 votes in the region in the upcoming December 7 election, describing the target as unrealistic and “bordering on fantasy.”
According to the NDC in the Volta Region, the NPP’s latest projection shows “more about the NPP's disconnect with the reality on the ground than any actual possibility of their success in this region.”
A statement issued by the party, signed by Sorkpa Kafui Agbleze, the NDC Volta Regional Communications Officer noted that, at a recent event, NPP National Communications Director Richard Ahiagba announced his party’s ambition to achieve what would amount to nearly half of the Volta Region’s 1,023,147 registered voters.
The NDC, however, questioned the feasibility of this target, citing past NPP claims that had similarly fallen short.
“For the NPP to assume that they could win nearly half of the votes in the Volta Region is not only absurd but frankly insulting to the intelligence of Voltarians,” the statement said.
The NDC further argued that this pattern of “overpromising and underperforming” has characterised the NPP’s electoral strategy in the region for years.
The statement highlighted the NPP's inconsistent track record, noting that in the 2016 election, the party aimed to secure 30 per cent of the Volta Region’s presidential vote, only to capture 10.81 per cent.
Four years later in 2020, a similar projection led to a slightly improved, yet modest, 14.14 per cent share. “Their failure to make meaningful inroads is evidence of the NPP’s disconnect from the region’s people and aspirations,” the statement emphasised.
The Volta Region has long been considered an NDC stronghold, and the statement underscored the party’s confidence in maintaining this support base, indicating: “We remain committed to protecting our historic stronghold and ensuring that the Volta Region continues to stand firm with the NDC.”
The statement further pointed to economic hardships and a depreciating cedi as reasons the NPP has struggled to gain traction in the region.
“This is the same party that has presided over years of excruciating economic hardship, with skyrocketing prices of goods and services, rampant unemployment, and a depreciating cedi,” it stated.
The NDC urged the region’s voters to “see through the NPP’s empty promises” and stand with the NDC, rejecting what he called “propaganda” from the ruling party.
