NDC’ll eradicate corruption in premix fuel distribution if we win Dec. 7 polls – Naana Opoku-Agyemang
The Vice-Presidential candidate for the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has vowed to tackle corruption in the distribution of premix fuel and subsidies to fishermen if the NDC wins power in the upcoming December polls.
Speaking at a durbar of Chiefs and residents in Shama in the Western Region, Professor Opoku-Agyemang sharply criticised the current government's management of these resources, alleging that corruption and secrecy have undermined the process.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang detailed the negative impact of corruption on the fishing industry, where she claims non-fishermen have taken control of premix fuel sales, depriving genuine fishermen of necessary supplies.
“When we were in government and provided fishing gears like nets, premix fuel, or outboard motors, it was done openly,” she said.
She continued that: “Now there is so much secrecy in the sale of premix fuel. We now have people who are not fishermen but are involved in the business of selling premix fuel.”
Professor Opoku-Agyemang emphasised the need for transparency, noting: “The fish harvested don’t come in party colors and are bought by all persons, so we have to take care of the fisherman. I’m from a fishing community so I understand the sufferings of the fisherman.”
The NDC's Parliamentary Candidate for Shama, Emelia Arthur, supported this stance, accusing the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of misleading the people of the area and urging them to support the NDC for effective solutions.
During her three-day campaign tour of the Western Region, Professor Opoku-Agyemang engaged with local traders, chiefs, and residents, promising to address development issues, improve road infrastructure, and introduce initiatives like the Women’s Bank and a 24-hour economy.
Tarkwa traders have shown support for the NDC, citing past successes and promising enhancements in economic opportunities.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang’s campaign tour will proceed to other constituencies, including Essikadu-Ketan, Sekondi, Takoradi, Effia, and Kwesimintsim.
