My faith doesn’t permit same-sex marriages – Mahama pledges swift passage of Anti-LGBTQ+ laws if elected in Dec. polls
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has vowed to intensify efforts to combat LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana if he wins the upcoming general elections.
At a gathering with religious leaders in Accra on Tuesday, 1 October 2024, Mr. Mahama committed to strengthening legislation aimed at curbing the influence of the LGBTQ+ community in the country.
During his address, the NDC flagbearer expressed deep concern over the delayed passage of the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, attributing the hold-up to the current administration's inaction.
He highlighted that President Nana Akufo-Addo has yet to sign the bill, citing ongoing legal challenges at the Supreme Court as a significant barrier to its progress.
Reaffirming his personal opposition to LGBTQ+ practices, Mr. Mahama stated that his views are firmly rooted in his faith and values, which he believes reflect the sentiments of the majority of Ghanaians.
"My faith doesn’t permit same-sex marriages or relationships, nor does it endorse human-animal relationships or allow people to change their gender as they wish," he declared.
Mr. Mahama assured the clergy that, if elected, his government would prioritise the swift passage of the anti-LGBTQ+ bill into law.
"This is a fundamental belief that I hold, and it is grounded in my faith. I, therefore, assure you that the promotion of LGBTQ+ will have no place in our schools and communities," he emphasised.
