Goodluck Jonathan urges Ghanaian politicians to honour Dec. 7 polls results for peace
Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has called on candidates in Ghana’s 7 December general elections to accept the results in a spirit of peace and democracy.
As head of the West African Elders Forum and the ECOWAS election observation mission to Ghana, Mr. Jonathan is spearheading initiatives to ensure a credible and peaceful electoral process.
The forum, comprising former West African leaders, is dedicated to conflict prevention and resolution during elections.
Addressing the National Election Security Taskforce on Thursday, 5 December 2024, the former Nigerian President highlighted the importance of transparency and fairness in safeguarding Ghana’s status as a democratic exemplar in the region.
“We want elections that will be peaceful, transparent, and credible, ensuring all stakeholders will be happy,” he remarked.
The former Nigerian leader urged political actors to demonstrate maturity and readiness to either win or lose in the interest of national stability.
“Only one person wins in an election, and so whenever you are going for an election, you should be ready to either win or lose,” he advised.
Mr. Jonathan praised Ghana’s longstanding reputation as a democratic beacon in West Africa, urging all involved to uphold this legacy through responsible conduct.
The National Election Security Taskforce, in collaboration with the ECOWAS mission, reiterated their commitment to ensuring a secure and impartial electoral process.
