GA/R: Tensions erupt in Weija-Gbawe over parliamentary results declaration
Chaos broke out in the Weija -Gbawe Constituency of the Greater Accra Region as aggrieved supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) stormed the Electoral Commission (EC) office, demanding a redeclaration of the parliamentary election results.
The EC had declared Jerry Ahmed Shaib of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the Member of Parliament-elect for the Constituency.
Mr. Shaib secured 32,608 votes to defeat the NDC’s Felix Odartey Lamptey, who garnered 30,460 votes.
However, NDC supporters alleged that the results were not a true reflection of the vote, questioning the grounds on which the EC made the declaration.
Speaking on the GHANA YENSOM morning show hosted by Kaayire Kwesi Apea-Apreku on Accra 100.5 FM on Thursday, December 12, 2024, Mr Samuel Addo' the station's Central Regional correspondent said the disgruntled supporters were chanting and asserting their rights, while police officers worked to restore order and maintain calm amidst the heated protests.
He said the situation escalated and the police had to call the Military to restore calm.
They threatened the Returning Officer for padding the votes of Jerry Ahmed Shiab with the 2020 election pink sheet results.
