Ekumfi: Over 100 NPP supporters defect to NDC

About 120 fishermen from Ekumfi Narkwa in the Central Region, who were previously members of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), have announced their defection to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
This announcement was made during a community durbar on Thursday, 1 August where the fishermen interacted with Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the running mate of the NDC’s flagbearer John Mahama.
The fishermen cited their need for an improved livelihood as the primary reason for their decision.
They expressed concerns that their fishing businesses are on the brink of collapse due to the high cost of pre-mix fuel, outboard motors, and other fishing necessities.
"The government is not concerned about our welfare. We can no longer entrust our lives and fishing occupation in the hands of the NPP," stated Opanyin Owu Bonsu, the leader of the defectors.
He highlighted that despite their appeals to the government to address the rising cost of pre-mix fuel, prices have continued to soar.
In 2016, they purchased a yellow gallon (Kufour gallon) of pre-mix fuel for GHC 520, but the price has now escalated to between GHC 2,500 and GHC 2,800 per gallon.
Additionally, the cost of outboard motors has become unbearable, with prices reaching around GHC7,000.
"We feel deceived, and we are from today no longer with the NPP," he declared, which sparked jubilation in the community.
Addressing the durbar, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang promised that the next NDC administration would implement effective policies to promote the welfare of fishermen, fishmongers, and traders in Ekumfi and other coastal areas.
She emphasised that the NDC's policies are always designed with the development and welfare of the citizenry in mind.
"Development is our goal," she stressed, assuring Ekumfi and the surrounding areas of development when the NDC returns to power.
She urged the electorate to be cautious and not be deceived by the ruling NPP, encouraging them to reflect on their current livelihood and make informed decisions.
The Regent for Ekumfi Narkwa Traditional Area, Morgan Darko, representing the chief of the area, assured the NDC of their support to return to power and complete the projects initiated in the area
